Big brother is at it again

Well, the supreme court has now allowed the government to decide yet another freedom of ours, whether or not you have the right to forgo health insurance.

Dr. B:
Welcome socialism, good-bye yet another personal freedom! Next thing you know they will mandate disability insurance, life insurance, hazard insurance and the list goes on. Remember democracy is just a transitional stage before socialism eventually erodes into dictatorship. History will always repeat itself because we never learn from our mistakes.

Goodbye white coats?

Apparently hospital lab coats are hot beds of bacteria. Studies have shown that over 80% are colonized with the same dangerous MRSA and othr bacteria that are found on their hospitalized patients. The good news is that a new material Vestex is able to prevent the growth of these bacteria.

Dr. B:
Looks like a winner if they can make the material into lab coats and scrubs. Great news for doctors and patients alike. This still does not take away the need for other hygienic measures like hand washing.

Don't smoke your bladder

According to a recent article in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, women who smoke are more likely to have bladder symptoms such as urgency and frequency.

Dr. B:
Makes sense. There are many chemicals that are inhaled when one smokes and many are excreted in the urine. This has been linked to bladder cancer and these chemical irritants could certainly create annoying bladder symptoms. Yet another good reason to not smoke!

Plastic or paper, who cares?

In the august 2011 American Journal of Ob/Gyn there was an article that women prefered permanent sterilization over IUD placement in the immediate post delivery time. The article points out differences in education, socioeconomic status etc. as possible reasons why more women were not getting IUD's.

Dr. B:
Who cares? Terrible study and worthless conclusion. First, IUD's are not permanent unlike sterilization. If someone does not want any more children why would they choose a reversible method of contraception? Interesting that someone even bothered to study this and write an article. IUD's are great and have their place and sterilization procedures are great and have their place. They are not interchangeable.

Hip fracture without hormones

Recent study looking at over 80,000 women who stopped taking post menopausal hormone replacent therapy had an increased risk for hip fracture.

Dr. B:
What did we expect? We knew that taking hormones reduced hip fractures so it would be a no-brainer that if we stop protecting then we start producing more fractures, that is. Starting or stopping postmenopausal hormones should not be taken lightly!
